Medication and How They Can Affect Your Mouth

Prescription medications are becoming more common and poly pharmacy—being on multiple medications—is also increasing, especially amongst the older population. Drugs, including natural supplements and prescription medications can have significant effects on your mouth and may influence your dental treatment. That’s why we always request you let us know about any medications or any supplements you take.

For example:

  • Blood thinners e.g. aspirin, and anti clotting agents e.g. Plavix commonly prescribed for cardiac conditions increase your risk of bruising or bleeding. This is particularly relevant for oral surgery or dental extractions
  • Bisphosphonate medications e.g. Fosamax, Prolia are commonly used to treat osteoporosis but may also be used to treat cancer. In a small percentage of people, their use may affect the healing of the jawbone.

If you take either of these medications, then we may need to closely liaise with your GP or specialists when planning essential dental care.

Dry mouth or xerostomia causes a lack of saliva and is another common side-effect of many prescription medications especially when they are combined. It increases the risk of tooth decay, gum disease and can be very uncomfortable. If you have xerostomia, we will work with you to minimise the effects and to help keep your mouth fresh, clean and comfortable.
