We generally need to see children every six months for regular examinations. Our dentists here at Redcliffe Dental are very experienced in treating children and are extremely gentle. We go out of our way to make each visit as enjoyable as possible as we want every appointment to be a positive experience.
Children with healthy mouths will not need x-rays at every appointment. If they don’t have any active signs of tooth decay or a history of cavities then they’ll generally need x-rays every one to three years, depending on their age. Children with active tooth decay or with a history of cavities, and who we consider to be at an increased risk will need x-rays more frequently. We only take dental x-rays when absolutely necessary. All our x-rays are digital and emit extremely low levels of radiation so they are very safe. Regular dental x-rays are helpful for showing us areas that are normally hidden from view and are used to detect any signs of infection or decay as well as to plan any necessary treatment.
How often should my child have a dental check‑up?
Most children should see the dentist every six months for routine examinations and maintenance. Appointments may be more frequent if your child is at higher risk of decay.
What happens during a child’s dental check‑up?
The dentist gently examines teeth and gums for signs of decay or developmental issues. First visits often focus on familiarisation: children are introduced to instruments and the clinic environment. A professional cleaning can also be included if needed.
Will my child need x‑rays at each visit?
No. X‑rays are taken only when necessary. Children without decay typically undergo x‑rays every one to three years, while those at higher risk may need them more often. All imaging is digital and minimises radiation exposure.
