Valuable Tips to Maintain Good Dental Hygiene During the Holidays

The holidays are a time to celebrate with friends and family and many people will go away during the festivities. Although enjoyable, the change in routine combined with festive treats can play havoc with even the most conscientious person’s oral care routine. With a little foresight and planning, you can maintain good dental hygiene by following our valuable tips.

  1. When going to a friend or relative’s house for a meal, pack a small travel kit of a toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss just in case you decide to stay overnight.
  2. Popping a toothbrush into your handbag or backpack also makes easy to brush or floss after you’ve enjoyed a meal, especially as festivities can go on for many hours.
  3. Try to avoid drinking too many sugary drinks and cocktails but if you do indulge, sip frequently on plain water.
  4. Limit your consumption of sweets or sugary snacks in between meals and instead choose cheese or fresh fruit or veggies.
  5. Some people find the holidays stressful and may be more likely to clench and grind their teeth during sleep. If you currently wear a night guard, don’t forget to use it or to pack it when travelling.
  6. No matter how tired you feel, don’t forget to brush and floss regularly, especially just before bedtime. Your normal oral care routine only takes a few minutes and is even more important after consuming festive foods and drinks.
