Before & After

Before

After

Restorations or ‘fillings’ are routine procedures done to repair teeth. Wear, a lack of care and disease can all contribute to oral problems and sometimes the only way to save a tooth is through restorative procedures like fillings. At Redcliffe Dental, our dentists can help determine if you need a filling.

When is a filling needed?

Fillings are required when there is a hole or cavity in the tooth from dental decay. If the hole is not filled and the bacteria cleaned out, it will eventually get bigger and will cause the tooth to become very painful and infected. Fillings are also needed to repair broken, fractured or worn down teeth. Sometimes fillings are used in cosmetic dentistry to improve the appearance of teeth.

What types of fillings are there?

There are mainly two types of filling materials that are used: amalgam fillings and white ‘tooth coloured’ fillings. We use high-quality white, tooth coloured materials for our fillings and for most of our restorative work. All our materials are from well-known, respected brands that have been tried and tested over many years.

Surgical Warning
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should obtain opinions and advice by an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Results and procedures required will vary from individual to individual.

How long do fillings last?

There is no set time period for how long fillings last because every tooth, person and mouth is different. How you look after the filling and the rest of the teeth makes a big impact on how long a filling can last…the better you take care of it, the longer it will last.

How much does a filling cost?

A filling is charged based on how many surfaces of a tooth or how ‘big’ a filling is. The larger the filling, the longer the time and more difficult it is to place it, hence bigger fillings usually have a higher fee than smaller ones. Usually you are provided with a treatment plan beforehand outlining costs, but if you’re not sure please ask our staff or your dentist, they will be happy to let you know before work starts.
